Happy New Year! How’s everyone doing? 2018 has come and gone. That sure went fast. When you began the school year you thought Fall Season comps would never end. Suddenly here we are...2019. Fall Season long behind us and Winter Season raring to go. Let’s go over what’s happening this Winter.
Winter Percussion (Mallet Line and Drumline) and Winter Guard had their auditions before Winter Break. Season begins with RHSEU hosting the First Competition. RHSEU’s Winter Review will be held on Saturday, February 2nd. As we are hosting this event, our students will not be competing. They will, however, exhibit their routines. Following Winter Review REU Winter Percussion and Winter Guard will attend five competitions for the season: Pageantry on Parade (AKA PoP) @Fairfield HS on March 2nd, Armijo Winter Review @ Armijo HS on March 2nd, pending comp on March 9th, Herd Winter Review @ Elk Grove HS on March 23rd, and the NCBA WG Championships (AKA CHAMPS) @ Lincoln HS in Stockton on March 30th. You might have noticed that the comps at Fairfield and Armijo are on the same day. Yes! That is correct. There’s a lot of shuffling around in Fairfield that day.
Last year at the 2018 NCBA WG Championships our Winter Percussion were awarded Champions. They were rated #1 in Northern California! Did you miss their performance? You can find it on YouTube at https://youtu.be/dhEd3mRDyuo?t=205
Let’s wish them luck defending their title this season.
L- Pattern and Field Conductors AKA Solo Drum Majors are also competing on most of the same dates listed above at the same location. With one exception, instead of competing on March 16 they will be competing on March 9th at the Vallejo Winter Show.
Jazz Band and Jazz Choir already attended their first Festival on December 8th at CSU, Sacramento. They have two more graded Festivals to complete their season: Folsom Jazz Festival at Folsom HS on January 26th and, although technically in Spring, the Reno Jazz Festival @ University of Nevada on April 25th -27th. As you might have guessed from the dates, the Reno Jazz Festival is an overnight trip. Jazz Band also made a special trip on the first day of Winter Break, December 20th, to participate in a special wintery showcase for all the students of Oakbrook Academy of the Arts.
Another highlight of the Winter Season is Honor Band. The Solano County Honor Band is comprised of students selected from High Schools around Solano County. Students must audition. This year’s first performance was held Saturday, January 13th, at the Vacaville Performing Arts Theater.
Other events in Winter include the RHSEU 13th Annual Crab Feed. Tickets sold out fast this year. We’re sorry if you were not lucky enough to obtain tickets. Mark your calendars for next year! The event is held in Suisun at the Joseph Nelson Community Center on Saturday, February 16. It will include performances by the RHSEU Jazz Band and Jazz Choir, a Silent Auction, a Dessert Auction, and of course all you can eat crab and salad. During the month of March there will also be two FSUSD Musical Festivals, the District Band Festival on March 13th and the District Winter Showcase on March 20th (the first day of Spring!). Stay tuned for more information.
As usual please watch out for appeals for volunteers and donations. All of these competitions and events need an army of volunteers to be successful. We appreciate any and all help you can provide.
